Are Cycling Shoes Necessary?

April 10, 2020 By JamieMurphy

Are cycling shoes necessary? The answer to this question depends on the benefits (or the downsides) of wearing them. Why should you wear cycling shoes when you can other types of shoes like sneakers? For starters, you should be aware that the type of footwear has a great impact on workout sessions. So, are cycling shoes necessary?

With cycling shoes, you will certainly obtain optimal performance. The results can be seen on the level of endurance, strength, in addition to fitness. Your safety is also guaranteed. This is because the riding sessions will be comfortable with very low chances of slip offs that could lead to serious injuries.

However, cycling shoes aren’t necessary if you’re not trying to reach optimal performance. For example, if you’re a recreational rider or you commute occasionally then cycling shoes are definitely not necessary but they will provide you with additional support & increased performance.

Let’s take a look at everything cycling shoes has to offer.

More Power Input, Better Output

Of course, you can wear sneakers instead of these types of shoes. But sneakers don’t have the “power” factor that cycling shoes offer. These shoes have been specifically designed to enhance your workout experience. They have stiff soles. So, wearers can apply a significant amount of force when they are pedaling.

With their stiff soles, they easily allow you to convert the power input of the pressure. The power that is released by the muscles in your legs won’t get absorbed by the shoe’s cushions. Instead, it will go directly to the pedals. As a result, the process of pedaling will become easier. But there is still a catch. If pedaling becomes very easy, then you will definitely want to increase the pressure that you apply. This means that you will obviously amplify the resistance. With a higher amount and rate of power output, you will end up burning more calories. As a result, you will attain your workout goals and get fitter.

Better Workout Control

When it comes to cycling, having superior control is important. This is because there are factors such as “climbing”, slowing down, and accelerating. You can still be in control while wearing other types of shoes. But your chances of slipping off when you gain momentum are extremely high. On the other hand, cycling shoes put you in a lock position. They are non-slip footwear that allows the wearer to be in control and have better alignment. They offer excellent stability and, therefore, you can effectively accelerate and slow down because the high level of stability gives you much-needed confidence.

Great Muscle Buildup

As stated above, cycling shoes help to promote better endurance as they encourage them to apply more pressure. During your workout sessions, you will end up with well-worked out core as well as gluts. Because

of the better control and stiff nature, these shoes easily removes stress from other body parts that may negatively impact your workout. With every stroke that you apply to the pedals, your body ends up activating more muscle tissues. So, you will end up fitter.

Safety

With their stiff soles, it’s impossible to feel the pressure from the pedals. They help to protect your soles from stress and injuries that come with using bike pedals. Because of their non-slip nature, you won’t be at risk of suffering from hip, knee, leg, or ankle injuries.

Note: the latest workout bikes are designed with clip-less pedals. This feature is created to ensure that there is some rotational space that allows the knee to move in linear motion. As a result, an individual will end up with less tissue stress on the knee region.

Wearer Comfort

When choosing workout shoes, comfort is another top factor that you should consider. Comfort is usually in regards to how your feet are positioned. These cycling shoes put your feet in the right pedaling position. If you have large feet and you wear non-cycling shoes, chances are that you struggle to put the center of your feet on the pedal. On the other hand, those with shorter feet might end up pedaling with their toes. Cycling shoes eliminates all these because it ensures that your feet are well-positioned at the right angle and position to the pedal.

For comfort, how well should cycling shoes fit? The fitting simply needs to be proper. You don’t want to finish your sessions with sole blisters, numb feet or things such as hot spots. Comfortable footwear should provide a snug fit. Basically, your toes and heels should be able to touch the front and back of the shoes respectively without you feeling any pressure. It should be too small because your feet will feel tight. On the other hand, it should be too big because this means that your feet will be moving forward and backward when you are pedaling.

Durability

The pressure that you apply during workout sessions gets directly transferred to the shoes you are wearing. But cycling shoes guarantees you of reliability and durability. The materials used to create them are highly

durable because they are meant to be used for hard riding. From the soles to the upper parts, these shoes don’t easily get worn out.

Downsides of Cycling Shoes

There are those people that think cycling shoes aren’t necessary. In addition to that, wearing these shoes also comes with possible downsides such as:

  • They are designed for use with certain types of pedals. So, this means that you can’t use them with all types of cycling pedals.
  • If you want to walk around in them, you will end up feeling uncomfortable. They are not versatile enough to be put into numerous uses.
  • Although they offer better control and alignment, you will always have to clip out of these shoes when you want to stop.
  • If you are inexperienced, then you have to spend time learning how you will be clipping and out of pedals that are clip-les.

Final Thoughts

So, are cycling shoes necessary still? At this point, all it depends on your preferences. But for anyone who is a serious cyclist and wants to attain optimal performance during the cycling sessions, then these shoes are necessary. These are efficient shoes that provide direct energy transfer to your bike’s pedals.

So in terms of performance cycling shoes definitely makes a big difference. Although a casual recreational rider might not care for performance as much as a road rider so it really depends on what your riding style & what you’re looking to achieve. We hope this helped answer your question.

Have fun on your next ride!
